Environment Minister John Gormley is to launch investigations into alleged planning irregularities in a number of local authorities.

John Gormley made the announcement at his Green Party's national convention in Waterford this evening.

Minister Gormley said the "noble words about reform of the planning system" from national party leaders ring hollow at local level.

The Environment Minister said a "thin veneer of job creation claims are now being used to mask questionable rezoning motions".

It is understood up to six local authorities could face investigations about whether they are adhering to their development plans, or whether there are variations in relation to enforcement of the planning laws.
