There has been reports that the hostage crisis in Algeria has ended - but it is not yet known if there are any casualties.

The news comes following the earlier release of an Irish man who was among the group of foreign workers being held by Islamic militants.

36-year-old engineer Stephen McFaul from Belfast was freed after Algerian air strikes on the gas compound.

Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore earlier expressed his relief at the news that Stephen is now free and safe.
