General Election date to be decided this morning

The date of the General Election will be decided this morning - but it may not be called until tomorrow.

Enda Kenny and Joan Burton will agree a date before Cabinet this morning, but the Dáil might not be dissolved today.

Having discussed polling on Thursday, February 25 - the exact anniversary of the last election - the pair are expected to agree to polling on the following day, Friday 26th, a more traditional day of the week for voting.

Although the date will be agreed today - and likely shared at Cabinet, the election might not be called.

Instead the Taoiseach could give TDs one last day of business, and hold off until tomorrow before travelling to Áras an Uachtaráin, to ask for the Dáil to be dissolved and the election called.

President Higgins has no appointments either today or tomorrow.

Update 9.10am: Tánaiste Joan Burton later hinted that the General Election may be called today after all.

“I’m looking forward, as I’ve said, to the General Election, and after I’ve met the Taoiseach I hope I’ll have another meeting with yourselves,” she said.
