A man behind a €1.6m tax scam on imported garlic has had his six-year jail sentence set aside today.

A man behind a €1.6m tax scam on imported garlic has had his six-year jail sentence set aside today.

Paul Begley of fruit and vegetable importers Begley Brothers Ltd falsified paperwork and had containers of garlic from China labelled as apples to evade the higher customs duty on garlic.

The businessman, with an address in Redgap, Rathcoole was jailed last March but brought a challenge to the severity of the punishment imposed for evading customs duty.

The Court of Criminal Appeal will hear submissions before imposing a new sentence.

Mr Begley will remain in custody until that hearing.
