Gardaí warn: We're prepared to jostle with other protesters outside Dáil gates

The head of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) warned today that members will be starting a campaign to recover their pay.

The group, which represents around 2,000 mid-level gardaí, is holding its annual conference in Westport today.

The issue pay is expected to dominate, but the conference will also debate motions on station closures, terrorism and bullet-proof vests.

AGSI general secretary John Jacob said they are planning a huge show of force to demonstrate the need to reverse pay cuts.

"We're inviting our colleagues from around the country to join us in this march," he said.

"If they want to bring their families, if retired members want to come, they're entirely welcome.

"Were going to do it on the first day that the new Government sits. And it is statement of intent on our behalf, that we are putting this issue front and centre.

"And if we have to jostle for a place at the gates of the Dáil with other protesters, we're prepared to do that, because this is critical for our members, that their issues and concerns are highlighted to Government."
