Gardaí believe a house fire in Co. Louth overnight , which left an elderly woman with serious burn injuries, may have been started maliciously.

Gardaí believe a house fire in Co. Louth overnight , which left an elderly woman with serious burn injuries, may have been started maliciously.

Gardaí are praising the actions of a neighbour who suffered burns while rescuing the woman.

The alarm was raised at around 1am this morning when the fire was spotted at the house on Cord Road in Drogheda.

A woman in her 70's was rescued from the blaze and initially taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

Upon spotting the blaze, her neighbour, a man in his 30s, ran into the building and pulled the woman to safety. It is believed he was hurt in the rescue attempt.

She was later transferred to St James Hospital in Dublin, where she is being treated for serious burn injuries and smoke inhalation.

Gardaí in Co. Louth believe the fire may have been started maliciously and are treating it as suspicious.

They are are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
