Gardaí ramp up checks on mobile phone use while driving

Gardai attached to the Traffic Division are carrying out checkpoints tonight and tomorrow in the Dublin region to ensure drivers are not using mobile phones while behind the wheel.

During Thursday alone, over 100 fixed penalty notices were issued to motorists caught using their phones.

The Assistant Garda Commissioner, John Twomey, said the two central pillars that assist in their campaign to drive down the number road traffic collisions and fatal injuries are enforcement and education.

It is through checkpoints such as these that we can carry out both functions simultaneously, he claimed.
