Gardaí make fresh appeal in effort to find location of man's murder in Grand Canal torso case

Gardaí investigating the discovery of a torso in the Grand Canal near Ardclough, Co. Kildare, have issued a fresh appeal for the public’s help.

Detectives are working to identify the dismembered body found in a dark-coloured suitcase at the weekend.

Gardaí say the man was in his twenties but his nationality has not yet been determined.

A post mortem has been carried out which found no signs of gunshot or stab wounds and further tests are required, but Gardaí believe the man was murdered some time in the last five days.

Gardaí say the focus of their investigation is to find where the man was killed.

The man's torso was wrapped in plastic before being put in a suitcase which was spotted in the water between the 13th lock and Ardclough Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

Gardaí said they have received a large number of calls from the public and they are appealing for anyone who was in the area to come forward.

Superintendent Gerry Wall said: "We know that the man was killed at another location and the focus of our investigation is to find where the man was killed.

"We are asking people returning to their property or premises after the weekend to check to see if there was anything unusual. Was a room or equipment disturbed or their premises in anyway different than when they left?

"Did you as an employee or employer notice anything different in your premises? If so please contact the incident room at Leixlip Garda Station 01 666 7800."

A Garda sub aqua team has been searching the site along the canal, along with the Garda technical bureau.
