Gardaí have arrested 13 people as part of a major clampdown on suspected drugs gangs.

The operation centred on Dublin's north inner city, but included searches around the country.

The dawn raids got underway at around 6am this morning and involved around 300 officers targeting the distribution network of a major drugs gang operating out of Sheriff Street and Oriel Street in Dublin.

Gardaí swooped on a number of homes, businesses and other premises not just in Dublin but in Cork, Wexford, Kildare and Cavan.

The investigation includes those suspected of moving heroin, cocaine, cannabis and ecstasy around the country to dealers.

A total of 13 people were arrested around the country - seven of them under tough anti-gang laws brought in last year.

They are being held at various Garda stations in Dublin, Cork and Enniscorthy in Co Wexford.
