Gardaí say a security alert in Dublin's Phoenix Park is now over.

The alarm was raised after the discovery of a suspect device in the Quarry Lake area last night.

The Defence Forces deployed the team to the wooded marshland area last night following a Garda request but were unable to commence operations until first light this morning.

The viable IED was made safe in situ and the scene was declared safe at 10.40am.

The team returned to base and the component parts of the device have been handed over to the Gardaí.

Motorists had been facing delays of up to 45 minutes because of traffic restrictions, while the Army Bomb Disposal Unit carried out an investigation.

The AA sid that congestion should begin to ease shortly.
