Gardaí concerned by 'determination' shown by those involved in Rooskey hotel fire

Gardaí are concerned “at the level of determination” shown by the person or persons who set two fires at the Shannon Key West hotel in Rooskey, Co. Leitrim last night.

This is the second fire at the location which is earmarked to become a reception centre for asylum seekers.

Garda Supt Kevin English told Newstalk Breakfast that it is too early to determine if there is a connection between last night’s fire and the fire on January 10.

Two small fires were discovered by security personnel last night on the first floor which they brought under control with fire extinguishers on site.

There was minimal damage, said Supt English.

There was a small amount of damage and it was confined to one area.

He said there were three security personnel at the location at the time with their cars visible in the car park outside.

“These individuals were not deterred by the presence of security personnel. It is a concern that they showed this determination.”

Supt English said that a full technical examination is being carried out to determine the cause of this fire.

He appealed for any witnesses in the area who saw suspicious activity in the area of the hotel last night between 8pm and 9.30pm to contact the Gardaí in Carrick-on-Shannon or to call the Garda hotline.
