Gardaí in Co Cork have identified the woman who died this morning after being found on the side of the road in Macroom.

The woman was found at Annagannihy Bridge, Rylane.

Gardaí have described the incident as a 'sudden death' and said a file will be prepared for the Coroners Court.

The woman found seriously injured on the side of the road in Macroom, Co. Cork has since died.

There will be a post mortem carried out at Cork University Hospital and gardaí have said they are keeping an open mind on the case.

Gardaí are now trying to establish what led to her death and have found a car which they believe she may have been driving.

The vehicle was parked in a farmyard two miles away from the scene at the Ivy Bridge in Annagannihy. The investigation will focus on how the woman got to where she was found.

Gardaí had earlier put out an appeal to help identify the woman, who was then seriously ill in Cork University Hospital.

It is now understood that gardaí are close to identifying her.

The woman was spotted at a bridge known locally as the Ivy Bridge, by a man passing in a car.

The man stopped and raised the alarm.

All options are being examined, according to Chief Supt Cadogan, including the possibility that she may have fallen or been hit by a vehicle.

Gardaí are seeking the public's assistance in identifying a woman who was found with serious injuries on the side of the road in Co Cork.

The woman, who is in her 70s, was found seriously injured at Annagannihy Bridge in Rylane, Macroom this morning at approximately 6.40am.

She has been removed to Cork University Hospital.

Anyone who may be able to assist gardaí in identifying the woman is asked to can contact Macroom garda station on 026 -20590 or any garda station.
