Garda Commissioner urges calm in arguments in wake of stabbings

The Garda Commissioner is appealing to people to act in a reasonable manner if caught up in arguments.

Martin Callinan's remarks come in the wake of a number of recent fatal stabbings and serious assaults in Dublin.

He said it would be impossible to ban knives and other sharp objects from use, but people must be responsible in how they conduct their business.

"Society has decisions to make in terms of how they behave… it would be impractical to suggest that you should ban knives, all sharp objects," he said.

"People have a legitimate purpose for using these type of instruments, so it is important that people behave when they're out in public, and when arguments ensue, that they act responsibly."
