Galway teacher dies in Shanghai

A young Irishman has died in the Chinese city of Shanghai.

He has been named locally as Robert McHale, from Galway, who had been teaching English in China.

The 23-year-old had been missing from Jiaxing in the Zhejiang province, and last seen at about midnight on Monday.

Family and friends posted to social media, attempting to get word out to locals in China, and reported that he had left his apartment without his belongings including passport, bank card or phone.

They also reported he spoke very little Chinese.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is giving consular assistance to his family through the Consulate-General in Shanghai.
