Gallagher: There was no wrongdoing

In the dying hours of campaigning in the race for the Aras, independent candidate Seán Gallagher has apologised for what he calls "any confusion" in relation to his links with Fianna Fáil.

He has once again hit out at Sinn Féin candidate Martin McGuinness, saying he used a television debate earlier this week to launch a classic "political ambush" on him in an effort to muddy the waters before the people go to the polls.

Mr Gallagher reiterated that he has done nothing wrong.

Mr Gallagher said: "I apologise for any confusion. I wasn't sure whether, could he have given me a cheque to pass on to Fianna Fáil, it wouldn't be a standard practice and I was unclear as to whether or not he gave me something.

"Anyway, the issue was he didn't, that was clarified the next morning and the story changed by Mr McGuinness, so the important thing here is there was no wrongdoing, there was no legal issue."

Meanwhile, Fine Gael candidate Gay Mitchell has rejected any suggestion that he made a "bad call" in entering the Presidential race.

In an interview on Shannonside radio today, Mr Mitchell has been defending his bad performance in the pre-election polls.

The latest Sunday Business Post Red C poll has him on just 6% while a Sunday Times Poll showed 8% support for him.

This is despite Fine Gael being the most popular political party at present.

Mr Mitchell denies that that he made a bad call in seeking the Fine Gael nomination against other strong candidates like Pat Cox.

He said he feels at this stage like no-one wants to discuss the presidency, and said the final results will be much better than the opinion polls so far.
