Fuel-leak fear sees plane make emergency landing in Cork

A plane bound for Barcelona from Belfast made an emergency landing last night after pilots raised concerns about a suspected fuel leak.

The Boeing 737-300 Air Contractors flight was carrying 149 passengers and a full crew. Nobody was injured in the incident.

After making the diversion from its route to Reus airport near Barcelona, the aircraft made a safe landing in Cork.

Gardaí, safety crews and engineers were quickly on hand to inspect the scene.

A Cork Airport spokesman confirmed that a runway inspection had taken place, and no fuel has been detected on the airport runways. The exact cause of the emergency could not be confirmed until a full inspection has been completed, however.

Normal services have now resumed at the airport. The incident did not cause any disruption to the airport’s flight schedule, the spokesman said.

All passengers and crew on the flight will be staying overnight in Cork. It is thought that alternative arrangements will be made for them to continue their journey to Barcelona tomorrow.
