The Junior Health Minister Roisin Shortall has announced that those with long-term illnesses will be entitled to free GP care from March of next year.
The move is part of a plan to introduce free GP care for everyone by 2015.
Minister Shortall has also stated that from March 2013, the 50,000 patients who are on the high-dependency drugs scheme will also no longer pay GP fees.
It is estimated the first phase of the reform for those with long-term illnesses will cost €300m.
