A fourth man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a Polish man in Athlone.
The body of 23-year-old Patryk Krupa, who was known to Gardaí, was recovered from the River Shannon on Friday night.
The body was discovered partially submerged in water in an area known as Bogginfin.
Detectives are now examining reports that a man was attacked and bundled into a car at Lloyd's Lane in Athlone shortly after 8pm on Friday night, in an incident that may be linked.
Two men are in custody in Athlone this morning in connection with Mr Krupa's murder, while two others have been released without charge.
Mayor of Athlone Frankie Keena said the incident has shocked the town.
"It's out of the ordinary - it's not the type of thing that is common in Athlone, which is a thriving, vibrant town," he said.
"My thoughts on this are that (those responsible) need to be put in jail, and to be put away, because there is no room for them in our society.
"It's a really horrific incident that took place."
