Investigations are under way following two fatal crashes yesterday.

Four members of a family were killed in a smash in Co Westmeath and a pensioner lost his life in Monaghan.

Four members of an extended family were killed when the car they were travelling in collided with a jeep on the N4 Dublin to Sligo Road north of Mullingar

A 10-year old girl and three women, aged in their late 30s and early 40s, died instantly.

Gardaí say the crash took place at 7.45am yesterday morning at Portnashangan and are appealing for witnesses.

A pensioner has also died following a crash in Co Monaghan.

A car hit a ditch then collided with another car at Cappog, Ballinode at around noon yesterday.

The 84-year-old driver of the first car was removed to Cavan General Hospital where he later died.

It brings the death toll on the nation's roads in June to 17, with 92 fatalities so far this year.
