Five youths were due in court today in connection with a brutal rape and attack in Co Clare.

The gang of four teenagers aged between 14 and 17, and a 24-year-old, were arrested on Friday after a sexual assault in Cratloe Woods, near Shannon.

A couple in their mid 30s were attacked at about 4am that morning as they sat in their car.

It is alleged that the woman was repeatedly raped while her partner was beaten with a golf club and locked in the boot of a car.

The five appeared before a special sitting of Ennis District Court last week charged with rape, robbery and false imprisonment.

They were denied bail and remanded in custody to appear before Kilrush District Court today.
