New figures show that people in the fishing industry are 40 times more likely to be killed at work, compared to other sectors of the economy.

The fatality rate in the general working population is 2.5 deaths per 100,000 workers, while in the fishing sector it is 92 per 100,000.

The Health and Safety Authority is launching a new awareness campaign aimed at reducing death and injuries in the fishing industry.

The NSA is urging skippers to improve safety standards and take precautions to protect themselves and their crew.
