Lord Mayor of Belfast Jim Rodgers has said a firebomb attack on the home of two elderly sisters appeared to have been sectarian.

He claimed the house had been attacked on at least four previous occasions, mainly with windows being broken.

He said of the victims: ‘‘They do nobody any harm. They have lived there for more than 50 years.

‘‘Quite a number of people have had to leave that area because of attacks but they have remained firm and I am hoping that they will not move out.’’

Meanwhile, A 41-year-old man was recovering in hospital today after a paramilitary-style shooting in Ballynahinch, Co Down.

The victim was confronted in Bedham Lane shortly after midnight, ordered to lie down and then shot in the right calf.

And a 19-year-old man was beaten by a masked gang wielding sticks, bats and an iron bar in Strabane, Co Tyrone.

He suffered a suspected broken right leg, puncture wounds to both legs and bruising to his body in the attack in Linkside Gardens, which happened at 11pm last night.
