The final report of Mahon tribunal has been published online this morning after being first submitted to the Dáil.

The tribunal - which lasted 917 days - was set up to investigate planning corruption and payments to politicians.

Its findings in relation to former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern will be closely watched.

Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte said this morning that although the tribunal is estimated to have cost the taxpayer up to €300m, he thinks the Irish people will see it was a worthwhile investigation.

"€300m is an awful lot of money," the Minister said.

"But the workings of the tribunal have had a profound formative influence on the planning system in Ireland.

"What happened in the days covered by the tribunal are hopefully behind us and couldn't happen again.

"If it changes what were the undoubtedly bad practices in the planning system in the past then I think citizens of Ireland have reasons to be grateful."
