Fianna Fáil PP meets in wake of Ó Cuív resignation

Micheál Martin met with the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party last night after the departure of Eamon Ó Cuív as his deputy leader.

Deputy Ó Cuív stepped down after saying he couldn't guarantee support for the party's stance on the upcoming fiscal treaty referendum.

He could even face expulsion from Fianna Fáil if he votes against the treaty in the Dáil.

Reports this morning said backbenchers and Senators were last night inundated with calls from angry grassroots members of the party over the resignation, with many said to be unhappy at the treatment the former frontbench spokesman on communications received.

TDs are also reported to be angry over Deputy Ó Cuív's decision having split the party on the matter of the EU treaty referendum.

An emergency meeting was held in Leinster House last night, but most TDs were happy that the matter had been dealt with.

All eyes are now on the party's Ard Fheis this weekend, which is set to be a lively affair.
