FG backbencher: 'Last thing we need is' Frank Flannery's return

A Fine Gael backbencher says he does not want to see Frank Flannery return to the party.

It is reported that the Taoiseach Enda Kenny has met with Mr Flannery to discuss a potential return.

Mr Flannery quit as an advisor last year, amid controversy over his refusal to go before the Public Accounts Committee regarding spending at Rehab.

However, Fine Gael backbencher Anthony Lawlor says he would be an unwelcome distraction.

Mr Lawlor said: "I wouldn't be exactly overly happy with the fact Frank Flannery is coming back in, because it would divert attention from what the Government is doing at the moment - the success we are having on the economic front.

"The last thing we need is diversions away from the simple message that we have to send to the public out there."
