FF slams 'senseless' closure of Garda stations

Fianna Fail is accusing the Justice Minister Alan Shatter of being "divorced from the reality of life" in rural Ireland.

The party's Justice spokesperson Niall Collins was responding to reports today that the 100 Garda stations earmarked for closure this year, are to shut by the end of this month.

The Government announced the move last year, but it had been previously thought that the closures would be spread out over the course of the year.

However, according to the Sunday Independent senior Garda sources have been told the closures should be completed by the end of January.

Mr Collins said it is "a senseless move" which will hit the most vulnerable in society.
