Families spend an average of €764 on First Holy Communion.

According to the Ulster Bank survey the figure is an increase of €32 on last year.

The breakdown of the expenditure is:

• Party, food and drink: €334

• Child's clothes: €171

• Outfits for other family members

• Children's entertainment: €123

The poll also found that children clean up on the day, receiving around €591.

The most popular items bought by kids were toys followed by video games and clothes. Yet 12% of children opt to save the money.
