Expert group calls for abortion in certain circumstances

An expert group commissioned by the government has recommended that legislation allowing for abortion in certain circumstances be implemented.

The Sunday Business Post gained access to the full report and says that the group have outlined a number of options for the government with the favoured one being the introduction of legislation which would see a new act providing for limited abortion with added ministerial regulations.

Such legislation would bring Ireland in line with the Supreme Court ruling on the X case is required following the judgment at the European Court of Human Rights.

According to the newspaper, the report heavily emphasises that abortion be legislated for only in a situation where there is a risk to the mother's life.
