EU Ministers for Justice attend security meeting in Brussels

EU Ministers for Justice are holding an extraordinary meeting in Brussels this afternoon to discuss ways of enhancing security amongst member states.

The meeting was arranged in the wake of the attacks on Tuesday which left 31 people dead, 61 critically injured and 250 wounded.

Speaking in Brussels moments, Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald admitted Ireland will arm some Gardaí at Dublin airport as a response to the attacks in Europe.

She has said no country is immune from this type of terrorism: “No country is immune from this type of terrorism.

“We have no specific information that would suggest Ireland is at risk, but clearly it is the democratic way of life and democratic values that are being challenged by terrorists.

“So obviously we have to take every security precaution that we can and An Garda Síochána are doing that and the armed patrols are a response to that.”
