EU court rules linking to copyrighted content is legal

Websites with links to content like football highlights have been handed a major boost by the EU's top court.

The European Court of Justice said websites can provide links to copyrighted content hosted on another website, without that website's prior permission.

It means that websites which provide links to sports highlights are perfectly legal, as long as they do not host the videos themselves.

However, the ruling still means that TV companies who hold the copyright for sporting events can have videos removed from the website which hosts them.
