The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is warning illegal dumpers and industries with poor waste-management records of a major crackdown.

The first annual report from the agency's Office of Environmental Enforcement (OEE) reveals that complaints about odours at landfill sites and industrial facilities rose from 366 to 657 last year.

It also says 80% of local authorities uncovered evidence of backyard burning and fly-tipping.

The OEE says a new national environmental complaints system will be established following the setting up of the 'Dump The Dumpers' hotline, which received more than 500 calls in the past month.
