An elderly couple are recovering in hospital following an incident in which their car plunged into the River Boyle in Co Roscommon this afternoon.

An elderly couple are recovering in hospital following an incident in which their car plunged into the River Boyle in Co Roscommon this afternoon.

The car smashed through a wall and went into the river at around 2pm.

The emergency services helped rescue an 84-year-old man and an 82-year-old woman from the river.

They were taken to Sligo General Hospital where they are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
