A leading Irish economist is calling on the Government to leave the euro currency for the sake of the country's economic stability.

UCD Professor Ray Kinsella said Ireland would be best placed emerge from recession if it had its own currency. He said the markets had lost faith in the euro.

He said other small European countries, such as Denmark, had seen more prosperity by having their own currency.

"A small economy can survive and prosper outside a eurozone that has turned in on itself," he said.
