An Irish man is in custody in Amsterdam this morning after he was detained yesterday on foot of an international arrest warrant.

Freddie Thompson, who is in his early 30's, is being sought by Gardaí for questioning in connection with a serious assault in Dublin in January of last year.

He had been living in Spain but had been given permission to return to Ireland for a funeral.

The 33-year-old is also expected to face questioning over allegations about his paperwork.
