It has emerged Dublin Zoo has been defrauded out of almost €500,000.

Gardai are investigating after it fell victim to an international scam known as "invoice redirect fraud."

That is where criminals hack an official email which looks legitimate and ask for payments to be made to a different bank account.

Gardaí managed to freeze €370,000 worth of the payments.

The scammers are understood to have pretended to be contractors working for the zoo.
