A jury is due to be sworn in today for the trial of a former solicitor from Dublin who is accused of stealing more than €50m.
Thomas Byrne of Walkinstown Road in Crumlin is facing 52 theft and fraud charges.
Before being struck off the Roll of solicitors in 2008, Mr Byrne was a high-flier on the Irish legal circuit.
Today, he returns to the courtroom where he is facing charges of theft and mortgage fraud amounting to around €50m.
All of the offences are alleged to have happened over a three-year period starting in 2004.
They relate to residential properties in Dorset Street, Crumlin, Clondalkin and south Dublin and concern six banks.
During a previous court appearance, the father of three was granted extra legal aid to hire a forensic accountant as part of his defence.
The jury will be shown more than 300 exhibits on digital screens in a trial that is expected to take three months.
