Drugs and tobacco seized in Dublin

Illegal cigarettes and cocaine worth more than €150,000 have been seized in two separate operations at Dublin airport.

Last night, officers from Revenue’s Customs Service working with the Garda National Immigration Bureau found more than 2kg of cocaine, with an estimated street value of €145,600, concealed in a carry-on bag on a flight from Punta Cana, Mexico.

The bag allegedly belonged to a 48-year-old woman from the Dominican Republic. She was arrested and is due to appear in court later.

Earlier yesterday, a total of 22,600 cigarettes with a retail value of €10,530 were seized when a 23-year-old Romanian man was stopped and searched after he arrived on a flight from Chisinau, Moldova.

The man was arrested and appeared before Bridewell District Court last night where he was bailed to appear before Blanchardstown Court later this month.

The two seizures came on a day when more than 10 million cigarettes were seized at Dublin Port.

The Gold Classic brand cigarettes were discovered in an unaccompanied 40ft container which arrived on a ferry from Rotterdam.

Officers from Revenue’s Customs Service, which announced that seizure yesterday, believe the haul had a street value of €4.6m and a potential loss to the exchequer of €3.7m.
