Drivers continue to use mobiles while driving

New figures show that Irish motorists are continuing to flout the law when it comes to mobile phone use.

Last year, more than 33,000 drivers were caught using their hand-held devices while driving.

According to today's Irish Independent, some motorists claimed to be unaware it was illegal to text while behind the wheel and instead thought it was only against the law to take a phone call while driving.

It comes as gardaí yesterday launched Operation Focus, which will see officers redouble their efforts when it comes to road safety, starting in Dublin this weekend.
