Sinn Féin is demanding an independent agency be established to decide on home repossessions.
It follows reports that the coalition is going to close a legal loophole that prevents banks foreclosing on homes.
The move will form part of plans to deal with mounting mortgage distress.
SF spokesman Pearse Doherty says banks should not be allowed decide if they should take someone's home off them.
"There is a need for an independent agency to take the powers away from the banks and to allow that independent agency a chance to assess on a case by case basis the solutions required for both the lender and mortgage holder.
"That is the only way we can resolve this situation. It is now in a crisis mode and we need a crisis response from this government."
