Digital age of consent in Ireland has gathered mixed opinion

There has been mixed opinion as to what the digital age of consent in Ireland should be.

EU countries will be required to set a digital age of consent under new laws due to take effect in May.

It will require the parents of children under that age to allow them onto websites like Facebook or Instagram.

With calls for it to be set at 16 here, Ian Power from SpunOut.ie thinks that will bring its own issues.

He said: "from our perspective, this will not keep children any safer online.

"It is 13 at the moment and we already have issues with under 13s who are not safe online.

"Lots of those children who were affected in the Horan case were under 13."
