Deputy US Ambassador hails 'Irish-American' Obama

The Deputy US Ambassador to Ireland has said the re-election of 'Irish-American' President Barack Obama will see Ireland's relationship with the US go "from strength to strength".

John Hennessey Niland, the Chargé D’Affaires at the US Embassy in Dublin, is pleased that there was a clear-cut winner.

Mr Hennessey Niland said: "People like to joke that there is not a mafia in the White House, it's a 'Murphia'. There are so many Irish-Americans in the White House, including the President of course.

"So I would think that for the bilateral relationship, it would go from strength to strength. I think it already is as close as it has ever been, I think the visit by President Obama last year shows how close the two countries are."

The Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has said President Obama's re-election represents a good and hopeful day.

Mr Gilmore said the Irish Government looks forward to working further with President Obama, who he also hopes will revisit Ireland during his second term.

Mr Gilmore said: "I certainly, on behalf of the Irish Government, look forward to the next period of time, the next four years, working with President Obama and the American administration, developing and strengthening the very strong bilateral relations that Ireland has always enjoyed with the United States.

"This is a very good day, a very hopeful day."
