There was a 50% jump in the number of data-security breach notifications to the Data Protection Officer last year compared to 2013.

The office also investigated controversies involving PPS numbers at Irish Water and the Department of Education, and engaged with the Department of Communications in relation to Eircode - the national postcode system.

Helen Dixon has released her first annual report since taking over as head of the office from Billy Hawkes, who retired last year.

A record number of data breach notifications were received along with a record number of queries via email.

The office's staff went from 29 to 50 and an office was also established in Dublin.
