Dáil to vote on abortion-law repeal bill

Members of the Dáil will vote later on a bill to repeal the 8th Amendment.

The vote is being tabled by Independent TDs Ruth Coppinger and Joe Higgins, and calls for a referendum to allow the section of the constitution that outlaws abortion to be changed.

Women from the group ROSA (for Reproductive rights, against Oppression, Sexism & Austerity) will hold a banner outside Leinster House before the vote, calling in particular on the Labour party to support the Bill.

Ruth Coppinger said the group was targeting Labour because she said the party had "a cowardly attitude where they don't want to deal with this in the lifetime of this Government.

"They want to push it to a future Government. I think that's wrong and politically unacceptable, that they continue to force women into these situations."
