Dáil to update 'unparliamentarily language' list

The list of words and phrases which are deemed inappropriate for use in the Dáil is to be updated.

The list of words and phrases which are deemed inappropriate for use in the Dáil is to be updated.

It follows an outburst by Green TD Paul Gogarty who launched a foul-mouthed attack using a four-letter expletive to refer to the Labour Party TD Emmet Stagg last week.

The powerful committee on procedures and privileges is also to write to Mr Gogarty to express its condemnation of the outburst.

Under the rules of the Dáil the "f-word" used by Paul Gogarty in his outburst last week is not actually banned.

The Dáil committee on procedures and privileges met last night and agreed to write to Paul Gogarty expressing condemnation of his outburst against Labour TD Emmet Stagg.

The Ceann Comhairle Seamus Kirk who chairs the committee also proposed rule changes to give him the power to take firmer action - including suspension - of any TD who behaves in a similar fashion.

But the committee also agreed to update the list of words and phrases which are deemed inappropriate for use in the Dáil.

A sub-committee will revise and modernise the standards to make them more relevant - meaning the "f-word" is likely to be officially censored by the house authorities.
