A Green Party bill seeking to develop the economic and social needs of local communities is due to be debated in the Dáil today.

The Sustainable Communities Bill, if passed, would require local authorities to provide for amenities, jobs and environmental protection when planning.

It is based on similar legislation proposed in Britain and is designed to improve facilities in local communities.

Green Party leader Trevor Sergeant said: “You will find in places in Wales, England and Scotland particular communities that are far better off because of this kind of bill, because the local authorities are encouraged to work with and listen to local community groups.”
