D-Day for property tax payment

Homeowners who have not yet filed a Local Property Tax (LPT) return are being urged to do so by the deadline of midnight tonight.

The Revenue Commissioners say more than 1.2 million householders have so far paid the self-assessed tax.

The deadline for filing paper returns has already passed, with midnight tonight being the final cut-off for online registration on the revenue.ie website.

However, Revenue is keeping its dedicated property tax phone line open until 10pm this evening for those who want to register for the payment by telephone.

The number is 1890 200 255.

While all householders are required to file a return by midnight, payments by direct debit or by single debit authority will not come out of householders' bank accounts until July.

The same applies to those who opt to have the property tax deducted from their pay.

While Revenue has provided estimates of what a property may be worth, it stresses that the onus is on the householder to decide on how much their house is actually worth.

It says reminder letters will be issued warning that the Revenue Commissioners have the power to deduct from source for those who have failed to register to pay the property tax.
