The Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen, is considering introducing a zero alcohol limit for new drivers.

The Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen, is considering introducing a zero alcohol limit for new drivers.

Speaking after a conference of European transport ministers, Mr Cullen said the measure has worked at reducing road deaths in other countries.

Provisional drivers and young drivers would be on lower-level licenses, preventing them from drinking any alcohol before driving.

Mr Cullen said it seems like a good idea and “it’s part of the base in how other countries do their business”.

He added: “It’s an idea I’d like to adopt here. I obviously have to look at the legal implications of how we might do it.”
