Crowe calls for zero tolerance approach to blood alcohol levels in Dáil

Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte is insisting that there is no 'drink culture' in Leinster House.

Earlier today, Independent Senator John Crowne called for a zero tolerance approach to blood alcohol levels in the Dáil chamber.

John Crowne said that Oireachtas members are entitled to socialise in the Dáil bar, but was adamant that TDs involved in votes or debates should not drink until their working day is finished.

"I have no problem with there being a Dáil bar I have no problem with people having a drink however I believe we should have a policy of zero tolerance for any blood alcohol in the chamber," he said.

"People who may have to go back into the chamber to take part in the debate or to vote should not have anything to drink until the business of the day is over."

Inn response, Minister Rabbitte said it was a "popular myth".

"The truth of the matter is that the habit has almost disappeared in the last ten years, in particular, I would say," he said.

"Of course, the facilities of the house should be open for exceptional occasion."
