Cowen defends Govt cutbacks at business conference

The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, has launched another defence of the Government's cutbacks at a business conference in Dublin today.

The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, has launched another defence of the Government's cutbacks at a business conference in Dublin today.

Mr Cowen told delegates at the meeting that, while the Irish economy faced serious difficulties, he was confident they could be overcome.

He said tough cutbacks affecting many people in Irish society were necessary and also hit out at the Opposition for criticising the cuts without providing any credible alternative.
