Taoiseach Brian Cowen today insisted that the heavy workload at the office of the DPP will not delay the investigation into suspected criminality in the banking sector.
The Director of Public Prosecutions said today that his office is stretched and cannot cope with further workload.
In his annual report, James Hamilton said his team has coped so far, but if there is any increase in workload coming into the office, something will have to give.
In the Dáil the Taoiseach moved to offer reassurance that the criminal investigation into the activities at Anglo Irish Bank would not be compromised by delays.
"It's in the public interest that they will be dealt with as expeditiously as possible," Mr Cowen said.
"There has been concern raised already about the length of time that that takes, but there is also the necessity to ensure due process, and that nothing is said or done to compromise the prospective prosecution of persons that arises out of those investigations.
"There is no reason to believe that these matters would not be given the utmost priority."
